Hard Bop remains one of the most recognizable sub-genres of Jazz, after all its blues-inflected, groovin', yet highly intellectual undertaking brings a smile to most any jazz aficionado. Although there is a contingent who argue that hard bop is locked in the past, even in a musical ghetto, I beg to differ. Its one of the hippest ghettos that I know of, and a place to which I always find myself drawn. That said, this idiom is hardly an historical reference, as it remains vibrant and exhilarating today. In this hour, we will dig some great hard bop from the past and present.
