Over the past three decades plus it could be argued that one man played an outsized role in bringing the Hammond B3 organ back into the jazz fold. If nothing else, it will be this for which Joey DeFrancesco will be remembered. But, Joey contributed so much more. He aptly handled the challenge of the B3 with ease, almost making it look effortless. He played with many greats, many of them were his idols. He also played the trumpet, saxophone, sang, and covered a wide variety of charts including some of his own. Joey checked out of Hotel Earth a few days ago, way too soon. As a consolation, we are blessed with dozens of recordings capturing his energies and talents. In this hour, we will dig a small sample of his contribution to the jazz legacy.
