While popular culture, including the popular music that so often acts as a basis for jazz can become dated rather quickly, Jazz, as with all great art, is timeless. Recorded jazz clipped the century mark this last year, which affords us the self indulgent yet highly rewarding opportunity to ask, "Has Jazz said all that it has to say?" or worse "Has Jazz truly turned into a moldy fig?" Happily, I can state a definitive, "Absolutely, not!" Jazz is an artistic oddity that ingests and comments upon the world around us, ever evolving yet deeply rooted in a historical conversation that never ceases. Would you be able to have an engaging conversation with your great grandparents if they were alive today? If you are a jazz musician, you would indeed. In this hour we'll dive into some great second century jazz, and if you listen closely, you'll hear the conversations of the last century continuing to reverberate.
