There are keyboards aplenty in jazz, whether grand pianos, electric pianos or synthesizers they are heard in almost every sub-genre. But a keyboard that is less frequently heard is that of the electric organ. A rarity in the early days of jazz, the mighty Hammond B3 or others of its ilk remains a powerful, readily identifiable force in modern jazz. Although not as common as its 73 or 88 keyed brethren, the organ is a funky, soulful, and hard swingin' member of the jazz family. In this hour, we will explore some of the best tone-wheel generated grooves.
